Almost a month after a newly engaged couple were reported missing, the car belonging to one of the women was found in an area that first responders in Wilmington, North Carolina had previously searched.

On April 15, 2020, 25-year-old Paige Escalera and her fiancé, 27-year-old Stephanie Mayorga, were last seen leaving their apartment.  Later on during the night, a call come in to 911 about a car travelling at high speeds. The car, which is a 2013 Dodge Dart belonging to Paige Escalera, veered off the road and landed in a wooded area.

According to WECT, the police, fire department, and EMTs arrived on the scene and met with the caller. The caller told the first responders that he/she believed the car hit a wall and then landed in the wooded area next to the road.

WECT wrote that the first responders searched the area, but were unable to find any evidence of a crash during that time.

Although the first responders were using their flash lights during the initial search of the area, they haven’t said what prevented them from seeing Paige Escalera’s car; which they located on Monday, May 4, 2020.

Based on the 911 call and the location of the vehicle in a wooded area, the police believe that “extremely high velocity” is what caused the crash.

The police found two bodies in the car and are waiting on the autopsy reports before they say definitively that the remains are those of Paige Escalera and Stephanie Mayorga.
